Stargazers can now spot the opening Perseid meteors ahead of the main event. The display peaks in the heart of August next year. Preliminary views will be tricky, though. The glowing moon now washes out faint streaks. Try for darker hours near the core. The best views come from dark sky spots beyond city lights. Clear nights could show up to numerous flashes each hour at the height of activity.
